In the 1960s, an electronics expert from the Dayton, Ohio area was pulled over for speeding. Dale Smith, who had experience producing radar units for police, contended that he wasn't speeding: the police officer was operating the unit incorrectly. The officer wouldn't listen. In response to this, Mr. Smith invented his radar detector in 1968, which was later dubbed "The Fuzzbuster". These were being widely produced by 1972. The fuzzbuster sold a lot of units in it's day, and over the years even became a generic term for a radar detector.
